Stephanie’s Story

Stephanie’s Story

I was diagnosed June 17th, 2022, I was diagnosed with Invasive ductal carcinoma, (Breast Cancer).

I waited to join cancer lifeline till after surgery on July 27, when I had bilateral breast amputations (mastectomies.) I don’t know why I waited. I think the surgery made it real so then I had to deal with it and I needed the support Cancer Lifeline offered.

I wish I had known that cancer lifeline was out there and that I could have started immediately after diagnosis. I treasure every moment I’m in a Cancer Lifeline activity. I feel really well supported by the facilitators and the other participants.

I learned about cancer lifeline from my social worker at the Halvorson Cancer Center. I’ve been taking the writing and art classes, attending the support groups, and once attended the Equine therapy group. All these activities have helped me  to process my emotions about having cancer and it’s helped me know that I’m not alone in this experience. I love the people in all my groups. I’ve made friends with people and stay in touch now even when I can’t attend a group. I’m back at work part time so I don’t have the freedom in my schedule that I used to and my schedule conflicts with the groups I’ve been attending. I’ve been art-ing my way through this experience and have written, illustrated and published the first 2 books in my 12 book series, The Cancer Chronicles: A Cartoon Memoir. In book 2, I included a page on resources and listed Cancer Lifeline there. I want other people to know that Cancer Lifeline is out there and available to provide support and exploration. I love Cancer Lifeline. It’s been really helpful in maintaining my quality of life during this challenging time.
