Norman was diagnosed with metastatic (Stage 4) Prostate cancer at the end of May 2022. After having some issues with his left leg that required medical imaging, they discovered lesions, so was sent to a urologist who confirmed the diagnosis. He saw an oncologist and completed 5 sessions of chemotherapy. He is still on a drug trial and is doing well. One thing he wishes he had known when he was diagnosed with cancer was that he would need to be his own best advocate. It was helpful for him to record his conversations with his oncologist as it was a lot of information to take in all at once. He encourages others to ask as many questions as they need to, as they are the patient!
He found Cancer Lifeline in October of that year and began taking classes and attending the twice a month support group for people living with Metastatic Cancer. What makes that support group incredible is the people who just “get it” and is such a close-knit group of people who truly care for each other. He’s so grateful for online classes and groups so that he can participate fully no matter how he’s feeling that day.
He hopes everyone diagnosed with cancer utilizes the resources at Cancer Lifeline, as they will be there for you too, as we were for him. Cancer Lifeline has helped Norman immensely through the individual counseling he received, by participating in nutrition classes and support groups, knowing that he is not alone and has a community there to support him through shared experiences.
