Rick’s Story

Rick’s Story

Rick was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer about two years ago and began treatment immediately. Early on, his palliative care team at Providence Swedish introduced him to Cancer Lifeline, but at the time, he wasn’t ready to join any classes or support groups. About 6 months later, after doing some research on the various programs offered, he decided to give it a try, and he’s sure glad he did.

He wanted to be with others who understood his journey. The first group he joined was the Metastatic Cancer Support Group, where he immediately felt a sense of belonging—he had found his people.

Reflecting on his diagnosis, he wishes he had known about his genetic mutation earlier. While it’s uncertain whether it would have changed the outcome, he knows he would have explored the possibility of cancer much sooner. His geneticist later confirmed that this mutation was most likely the cause of his cancer.

Today, he finds deep fulfillment in the Metastatic Cancer Support Group. The group’s new facilitator, Anna, has been a warm and compassionate presence, further enriching the experience. In addition to the support group, he takes part in other classes, including writing, He also enjoys participating in exercise classes which he describes as both fun and engaging and attends as often as he can.

“Cancer Lifeline has been nothing short of wonderful—a place filled with caring people, enlightening classes, and meaningful support. I highly recommend this invaluable resource to anyone navigating cancer, as it’s a true gift.”
