Carol’s Story

Carol’s Story

Carol will be the first to tell you her story is a bit unusual. She was born with multiple tumors and underwent radiation treatment as an infant and toddler. Back then, radiation therapy was seen as a “miraculous treatment” that could make problems “disappear,” though much less was known about its long-term side effects. In her early 40s, she was diagnosed with several rare and complex tumors, leading to multiple extensive and life-altering surgeries. At one point, she was given less than six weeks to live, and at other times, her survival seemed unlikely. She’s faced numerous medical crises, caused her loving family immense worry, and had to step away from her professional career. Yet, with the unwavering support of her incredible family and friends, extraordinary medical providers, and an unshakeable sense of humor, I’ve persevered.

During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, she discovered Cancer Lifeline through the Northwest Lymphedema Center and began by attending the Lymphedema Support Groups and soon to Meryl Shier’s Vital Moves classes, Ami Karnosh’s nutrition classes, and various other programs and special presentations.

Carol is deeply grateful to Cancer Lifeline—the staff, presenters, and fellow participants are nothing short of amazing! The Lymphedema Support Group facilitators bring incredible skill and compassion to their work. Meryl Shier radiates kindness and has cultivated a healing space where participants engage in gentle exercises set to music. Ami Karnosh’s extensive nutritional knowledge, paired with her nonjudgmental and humorous approach, is both enlightening and uplifting.

These classes and groups have become a meaningful part of my life, and I’m especially thankful they’re available via Zoom.

“I firmly believe that love, kindness, laughter, and connection with others can bring joy and healing. Cancer Lifeline has been a vital part of that journey for me, and I am endlessly grateful for it.”
