Nancy’s Story

Nancy’s Story
Nancy started getting annual mammograms at age 30. In October 2019, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy, followed by radiation, finishing in March 2020, just as the pandemic began. During recovery, she spent a lot of time isolated, unable to be around people. She cried every day after returning from radiation, as there were no in-person or virtual support groups that she knew of, that were available locally.

One day, a friend suggested she look into Cancer Lifeline and the Women’s Cancer Support Group, facilitated by Basha Brownstein. Since Nancy lived in Idaho, the online support through Zoom was a true lifeline, helping her feel less isolated and alone. The group made a significant difference in her mental health, allowing her to connect twice a month, sharing experiences and hearing updates from others. Together, they discuss everything from “scanxiety” while waiting for test results to the everyday ups and downs of life. This past July, she met eight of her group members in person for the first time, an incredibly meaningful experience.

Now, Nancy is planning a celebration in January 2025 for her five-year anniversary of being cancer-free, where she’ll gather with fellow cancer survivors in person to mark this important milestone.
